We live in a busy world
Last week, I promised to write on the topic of relaxation and what our members do to relax.
Well, as turns out, nobody responded back to me. Guess everyone is busy! I take it that everything happens for a reason, so I decided to spend some time looking at what some fairly well-adjusted members and friends do to relax. I’m close with them, so I’m sure they won’t mind me talking about what they do to unwind.
Nancy, owner of the BayPalm Groupe, is a good friend of mine, mentor, Planet Beach member and business partner. I’ve known her for four years. As I’ve gotten to know Nancy, she’s shared with me what she does to relax. First off, Nancy is a very busy person-always on the go- it’s just her personality. So part of what Nancy does to unwind may not sound relaxing at all to some people, but it is to her! She works out. Every morning, the first place Nancy goes is 24 Hour Fitness, where she gets her daily workout. Then, twice a week, after visiting 24, she comes to Planet Beach to hydrate, tan and do a red light facial. She also spends a weekends with her husband, Bill, on their boat. Now that the weather’s getting warmer, she’ll no doubt be spending a lot more time out on the water.
Bob, my dad, is also a member of Planet Beach. Of course, his membership is free. Nepotism at its finest! My dad, who’s now 74, still works nearly full-time as an oil and gas promoter, investor and consultant. To relax, Dad likes to read and watch sports on TV. He also enjoys cycling and spending time with his family. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, if your family and you have a healthy relationship, you can never spend enough time with them.
My good friend Winston is a busy guy with two kids and a corporate executive wife. Winston became self-employed two years ago as the South Texas distributor for Q-Laser Systems. Something I’ve always admired about him is that, despite his hectic schedule, he knows how to have fun. I’ve had the great privilege of visiting Winston and his wife, Sheryl, in San Antonio, and I what I noticed is that they involve their kids in the fun. And, they take time for themselves. They always take a day of rest, and for them that day is Sunday, which they spend together as a family.
Michelle, a long-term PB member, is a successful realtor; her husband, Fred, also a PB member, is a corporate executive. They stay involved in what their kids are doing and are active in the community. Michelle comes to Planet Beach and tans to relax.
I’ve mentioned briefly what I do to unwind, since it’s been so important to help me get through what often seems to be a seemingly impossibly hectic life. I take Sundays to rest. Sometimes, of course, I do have to work. But most Sundays, I don’t, and I cherish that time. I’ll read the paper, take a nap if I want to (usually with one of my cats falling asleep on my chest), and talk to close friends and family. I may spend time with friends, going out to eat or going over to their house for dinner and a movie. I’ll also catch up on any last minute cleaning, but at my own pace. Whatever I do, though, I DON”T stress. I just take it easy and relax. I’m quite confident that allowing myself this day of rest makes me much more effective at Planet Beach.
So, my “words of wisdom”, or thoughts, whatever you want to call them, are to “Relax”. There are few problems in life that won’t be solved eventually. In fact, come to think of it, over time, they all get solved.
Just keep the faith, keep giving your best and wait for the rest. It will get better!
Next week, we’re going to talk about BURNOUT- what it is, how to avoid it and what to do if you’ve got it.
Until then, make it a great week!
~ Bill
