Planet Beach – A Contempo Spa in League City opened as a tanning salon in the brand new Bay Colony Town Center in February 2005. Planet Beach was a new concept to the Greater Houston Area, having just entered the market a few years prior, despite a great deal of success in neighboring Louisiana.
The first day of business, less than 20 people came in. However, the slow times didn’t last. Word caught on quickly, and by 2007, the little tanning salon was seeing over 50 people a day.
The end of 2007 brought change, as a new owner, Bill Artzberger, took over and decided to convert Planet Beach League City into a self-service spa, or a “contempo”, (short for contemporary) spa. The Planet Beach concept is to offer convenient, affordable spa treatments. Planet Beach League City began to offer massage, skin hydration and detox services, and facial treatments, in addition to the sunless tans and tanning it already provided.
The change was an instant success. In 2008, the membership base doubled, and people were coming to Planet Beach League City from all over the Southeast Texas/Galveston Bay Area. In 2008, the Planet Beach team again decided to expand its services, offering oxygen therapy, a complete skin care and nutrition line and teeth whitening.
Still, it took some members a while to embrace the concept of affordable, regular spa treatments. Getting inside of a strange alien pod-looking device to moisturize the skin and detox the body seemed foreign. After a while, a loyal spa membership base developed, and now referral traffic from existing members continues to grow.
Planet Beach League City continues to grow and add new concepts, introducing a Sauna service in 2010 and a state-of-the-art Mystic High Definition Mystic sunless tanning booth.
