Some Changes at Planet Beach League City

April 30, 2012 By admin

You asked, and we listened. In recent months, a number of our UV members have asked why they’ve had to make appointments. It makes no sense to wait 15 minutes for a ten minute bed that’s available now just to honor an appointment- this has been the common observation. We took a look at the situation and agreed. So, effective May 1, we will no longer require appointments for our UV services, which will now be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The exception is when the UV is included in a bundle of services done by the same person.

The second change is also the result of customer feedback. As our business has grown, there has been increasing demand for our spa services. As a convenience to our members, we have always taken appointments for these services. In recent months, these services have been busy, and we have had to book members several weeks in advance. This works fine unless someone does not show up for their appointment, which takes the service away from another member who might have wanted to use it during that time. So, effective May 1, there will be a $10 fee charged when a member misses his or her scheduled day without calling in advance to cancel. This fee has been suggested by a number of our members. While we do not like charging this fee anymore than someone likes paying it, this is a fairly common practice among spas to discourage patrons from making appointments they don’t keep, and it enables more members to use the services. Thank you for working with us on this change.

ONE MORE CHANGE
(YOU’RE GONNA LIKE THIS ONE)
Starting Monday, April 29, a medical massage therapist will be available Monday afternoons from 2 to 6 pm. Dana Allemond, who operates Sanctuary of Healing in the Medical Center near Bay Area Boulevard, will be doing hour long massages at a discounted rate for spa members. This is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. It enables spa members to receive the benefits of a true medical massage. A medical massage looks and feels very much like a regular massage (it’s awesome!), but it has the added benefit of improving overall health- reducing knots caused by lactic acid buildup, loosening tight muscles and improving posture and overall wellness. Ask one of our consultants for more details.

All About UV

April 30, 2012 By admin

Well, maybe the title’s a little misleading. Guess it should say “some” about UV because there’s so much to say.

Last week, we began a two part series on sunless tanning. This is Part II of that series as we cover UV (ultra violet) services, or as some affectionately call it, “tanning”.

In recent memory, few things that people do, other than cigarette smoking, drinking, overeating or partaking in illegal pharmaceuticals, have been as maligned as utilizing UV services.

“Tanning” has been taxed, attacked, warned against and outright shunned. In fact, in recent years, the so-called tanning industry has declined precipitously. At Planet Beach League City, we’ve also seen this, watching a dramatic shift in member composition from one that primarily used UV services to one that now mostly uses spa services.

We at Planet Beach have no opinion on UV- whether it’s good or whether it’s bad. We simply offer it as a service and emphasize what we’ve been practicing all along. You won’t hear say us things like “dark tan”, “get your tan on” or “maximize your tanning results.” At least not in a serious manner. Because that’s simply not what we’re about.

For our members who utilize UV services, we emphasize moderation.

Now, of course, a number of experts, such as alternative medicine expert, Dr. Joe Mercola, have come forward and said that maybe getting some UV isn’t so bad. A UV bed is, after all, simply a more intense expression of the UV that’s already present outside. Mercola, in his 2004 book, The UV Advantage, points out that UV wasn’t always this reviled. In fact, in the 1930s and 40s, doctors regularly gave doses of UV to clients for various ailments with good results.

Mercola and others believe UV can help with certain conditions. Among them, they believe moderate exposure can help someone prevent sunburn if they’re going to spend extended time in the sun. They also point out the fact that a person’s exposure is controlled in an indoor unit. UV can also be used to casually treat cosmetic skin conditions. More than three million consumers use UV services to self-treat psoriasis, eczema, acne, vitiligo (a condition in which there is a loss of pigment from the skin), and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Others use it to elevate their vitamin D levels. Approximately one million indoor tanners said they were referred to tanning facilities by their dermatologist. Other doctors say UV can help with certain types of health conditions, among them mental illness, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Normal levels of Vitamin D, associated with UV exposure, could also play a role in maintaining muscle strength, according to experts. In addition, as contentious as it sounds, some doctors say that mounting evidence suggests that such cancers as breast, prostate, colon and ovary might be, at least partly, influenced by vitamin D deficiency, largely caused by lack of UV. Another unexpected benefit, that is communicated to us by our members, is that their time in a UV bed is the only time they get to themselves in a day.

The debate on UV will likely continue for some time, with doctors and experts lining up on both sides.

Whatever your reason for doing UV, our approach at Planet Beach is simple. We start with a skin type analysis and then build a program based on moderate usage. This helps clients meet their primary objectives of looking and feeling better while maintaining overall skin health.

Then, there are our membership packages. We offer upgraded beds without the upgraded fees. Members pay one simple amount every month to utilize our UV services and can utilize them anywhere in Houston. In addition, our corporate headquarters also recently added UV memberships that allow members to tan anywhere there is a Planet Beach.

Maybe you’ve never done UV before and are wondering if it is right for you. If you have any questions about smart, safe and responsible UV usage, feel free to ask one of our knowledgeable and friendly spa consultants, and they’ll be happy to help you decide if UV is right for you.

Until the next time, make it a great week! -Bill

The Rites of Spring – A Mystic HD Tan

April 24, 2012 By admin

Ah, spring! It’s in the air. Wildflowers and trees with fresh green leaves. Nice, cool mornings and warm afternoons. If you’re in an outdoors setting, there’s perfect peace and tranquility. Nice. If only summer could be this way…

But then the heat sets in!

And we all know what happens then.

Yes, summer is just around the corner! This is an exciting time of year. I can remember when I was young loving the spring because I knew summer was coming. That meant vacation; time at the pool, beach or an amusement park; aimlessly doing nothing. Though I knew it was true, I didn’t think about that fact that as an adult, we get two weeks, maybe four if we’re lucky, unless we’re a teacher.

Hmmm….

Well, enough of those musings. Last week, I promised to write about our sunless tanning and UV services. Because the services are separate and distinct from each other, this will be a two part series.

This is Part I, where we’ll talk about our Mystic HD system by Sunless Inc..

By now, a lot you have had a chance to try our Mystic HD service. It’s become very popular. It features a sweeping airbrush that applies the Mystic solution from head-to-toe from four different angles.

We like to call it the High Definition Mystic. “HD” technically stands for Heater Dryer, but the people at Mystic call it “High Def”, too, so it kind of stuck.

How does it work, and why is ours the best in the area?

Cartridge System. Unlike a traditional Mystic system, the Mystic HD has individual, single-use cartridges. There are four different shades: Glow, Light, Medium and Dark, and we can mix those shades to create three more.

Customized Additives. The Mystic HD cartridge system allows you to include additives to maximize your results. Three different types of aromas give your Mystic a pleasant fragrance. There is a single use boost called Accelerator that prevents streaking and splotches and helps your Mystic tan set in quicker and last longer. Finally, there are bronze additives for those who want immediate results while their Mystic tan sets in.

Heater Dryer. One of the biggest challenges with a traditional Mystic unit is the requirement that people towel off after their Mystic. Because it is very difficult to towel dry in perfectly even strokes, this often results in streaking or splotching. The Mystic HD heat dries the skin before and after every use. Heat drying the skin before use helps maximize absorption and create a more pleasant experience. After application, heat drying the skin means the user no longer has to towel off.

More Thorough Application Process. Because the Mystic is sprayed in four up and down sweeping side-to-side motions, with the user standing in four different positions, the user will have a more even overall tan.

Complete Array of Products. Sunless Inc. has really outdone themselves here with a variety of products to meet your needs. Let’s say you want to look a little darker the instant you come out of the HD? There’s a Triple Boost Bronzer for that. Say, you want to keep the skin moisturized between uses. There’s a product for that. Or, let’s say certain areas of the skin don’t hold the Mystic as well. For instance, it fades off more quickly there than in other places. They even have products to touch up your Mystic in problem areas between uses.

So, there you have it. The Mystic HD, with its state-of-the-art technology, allows you to have a natural-looking tan in just seconds. If you want that natural-looking glow and would like to try Mystic, but have been afraid, why not try it?

We have a helpful, friendly team of spa consultants who will be glad to tell you more. If it helps to any- I do the Mystic HD myself and love it!

Next week, we’ll talk a little about UV.

Until then…make it a great rest of the week! -Bill

Spring Fever – Remodeling Update

April 17, 2012 By admin

Well, it’s spring, or early summer, or, truth be told, I don’t even know what it is…our weather has been so out of whack this past year. I guess we could just safely say, it’s mid-April, it feels like May and everyone’s acting like it’s summer. So, there ya go.

I want to take some time this week to update you on our spa renovation project. Earlier this year, we said we were beginning some updates to the spa, which includes new paint, new flooring in the lobby and hallway and new spa pieces.

We’ve already made some minor adjustments in décor and in the way we’re doings, right down to the kind of environment we’re creating in the spa. For instance, some of you may not have known that last month Planet Beach League City invested in a new scheduling software to accommodate our increasing membership and guest base. This means no more paper scheduling and the time it took to hand-write each appointment! And, if someone wanted to change their schedule? Oh, brother! But now, no more of that. This new software is fast and efficient. It lets us search for the next open slot for a particular service and tells us when a member’s upcoming services are. It can also help us reschedule recurring appointments. And we can easily reschedule appointments with just a few clicks. We at PBLC feel very good about this software and how it can allow us to better serve you, our spa and UV members.

This week, we made some other changes. The Planet Beach sign in the lobby is now gone. Also, this week, we replaced our massage chair. Many of our members loved our Cyber-Relax massage chair, but after three-and-a-half years and thousands of uses, it was time to replace the chair with a newer model.

Like its predecessor, this chair has hundreds of combinations. Unlike its predecessor, it also has movable arm rests, a very user-friendly control console, a heated light stick to apply to pressure points in the body and even a drink tray! It features plush leather and is very comfortable. It arrived yesterday, and a number of our members have already started using it.

But this is just the beginning. Our next major project involves moving equipment around to different rooms so that we can better serve you, our valued members.

And, the great news is- after many comments, and after seeing the extraordinary growth we’ve experienced, we’ve made the decision to add an additional hydration station! It most likely will not be within the next 30 days, but we promise we’ll keep you updated as we get closer to that date.

We are so excited about the changes taking place at Planet Beach League City. We have been truly blessed in many ways. We’ve especially been blessed with wonderful members and guests, many of whom have become our friends. We are so grateful for you and are glad you are enjoying Planet Beach League City. We can have the best equipment in the world, the best employees in the world and even the most knowledgeable employees in the world, but it’s you, our members and guests, who make it all worthwhile. We love seeing each and every one of you and are grateful for the opportunity to help you look and feel your best!

One more thing we’d like to add. When you see our team members, please congratulate them. They have been working very hard to make Planet Beach League City the best spa this side of the Beltway. Thanks to you, and thanks to their efforts, this past month Planet Beach League City was recognized as the Number 8 store out of over 230 in the entire Planet Beach franchise organization.

Congratulations to Jess, Katie, Samantha, Angel, Skyler, Elicia and Melissa for all their hard work.

Thanks to each of you for your continued friendship and support. We cherish you, our members and guests. Thank you for making Planet Beach League City a great spa and a great place for all of us to work. -Bill

Stay tuned for next week, when we’ll focus on our Mystic and UV services!

The Benefits of Sauna

April 4, 2012 By admin

Our sauna arrived on July 1, 2010. This was a service that members were slow to adapt. Nobody set appointments for it, and it was always available when people asked for it.

But who can blame them? It arrived on July 1, in the heat of our summer. People were on vacation, relaxing by the pool. Besides, who wants to think about a sauna when it’s 100+ degrees outside?

Slowly, slowly, however, interest began to increase.

As the weather turned cooler that fall, more members began to ask about it. What did it do? Was it like a rock sauna? How was it any different from lying outside in the middle of August? (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that question.)

And more and more people started doing it. Now, at long last, the sauna has become one of our more popular services, despite our weather.

So, what exactly is our sauna, which is officially called Saunatox? Developed by Therasage, it is a Far Infrared Sauna, which is far different from a traditional rock sauna in the way it works (it requires far less heat than a traditional sauna) and in the way it detoxes the body.

Far Infrared waves are radio waves that can penetrate a mass. With our sauna, the infrared waves, or rays, penetrate two to three inches deep into the body. Since our bodies are mostly made up of water, molecularly, those rays hit the fluids in our body and excite them, creating internal heat and raising the body’s core temperature. As these rays penetrate through the body, and the body’s core temperature rises, the body releases toxins through the pores.

The process is far different from that of a hot rock sauna, where the temperature needs to get to almost 200 degrees F to have the same effect, making the typical rock sauna much less comfortable, so that the user cannot stay as long.   Whether a person does a far infrared sauna or a rock sauna, use of a sauna provides a number of other health benefits. In addition to detoxing the body, it increases circulation by forcing the blood to flow throughout the body. This increased blood flow, in turn, causes more nutrients and oxygen to be delivered to every part of the body. Sauna also is believed to reduce cancer-causing free radicals, reducing the body’s risk of developing cancer. Detoxing also can have the side benefit of helping the user lose weight.

Here are some benefits of our Saunatox.

  • Natural pain relief
  • Patented even distribution and delivery system of beneficial Far Infrared heat and Negative Ions. Negative ions help balance the body when there are excess positive ions, which are caused by electronic equipment, stress and even intense exercise.
  • No electromagnetic radiation
  • Safe, long-lasting, deep penetrating therapeutic heat
  • AM/FM-CD Player
  • Patented Infrared system
  • All natural wood
  • Non toxic
  • Interior reading light
  • Antibacterial materials
  • All natural Detoxification
  • Lower temperature to detox required: 140° versus 200°

So, if you haven’t tried or sauna or have been thinking about trying it, but just haven’t, why not give it a try? If you’re a Spa Member, it’s already included in your membership. If you’re a UV or Mystic member, ask a Spa Consultant about trying it. We’re confident you’ll like it!

Make it a great rest of the week.

What is a Photo Facial?

March 20, 2012 By admin

Light your Way to Beautiful Skin!!

In the past two newsletters, I committed to writing more about our services and what we offer at Planet Beach League City. So, over the next few weeks, I’m going to focus on our services and why people enjoy them. This week, specifically, I’m going to talk a little about our Lumiere, or Photo Facial, treatment.

Lumiere, developed by a a company called Phototherapeutics, non-invasively improves the appearance of fine lines, skin tone, texture and overall clarity. Planet Beach’s Lumiere treatment, or “luminous facial” has been popular with our members since we introduced it in 2008, following the lead of our franchisor, Planet Beach Franchising Corp. The process uses concentrated red LED (light emitting diode) lights. The lights in our facial lamp are emitted at a wavelength of 633 nanometers, which accounts for their red color.

So, what are the benefits of Lumiere?

  1. It is effective and non-invasive. Customers have reported seeing improved skin tone, texture and overall appearance after just a few uses. In addition, there is no pain or down time.
  2. It is ideal for men and women of all skin types. Members have used our red light photo facials to treat symptoms associated with sagging or aging skin, skin discolorations, acne and more.
  3. It is convenient. A session lasts only 20 minutes, so our members literally come on their lunch break or after work.
  4. It is affordable. Many treatments people use to improve their skin’s overall appearance cost thousands of dollars, and the results do not last. The reason people like our red light phototherapy is that sessions are included in the membership. The only additional investment is the skin care products that are used in conjunction with this service, and a six-month supply of these products less than the cost for one high-end facial treatment, such as Botox or microdermabrasion. In addition, we do not employ aestheticians, which also brings down the cost of your investment with us even more.
  5. It is relaxing and private. Members enjoy much-needed along time when using this service and emerge feeling energized and refreshed.

Many of our members use our facial service on a weekly basis. Others use it as little as once or twice a month. If you’re already a spa member, hopefully, you’ve had the chance to try our Lumiere and are enjoying the results. It not, we encourage you to give it a try! Our friendly and knowledgeable spa consultants will be glad to talk with you about the benefits and schedule you for a service.

Now, for some quick housekeeping. How are we doing? Many of you have noticed how busy we’ve become lately, and we’ve been making plans to accommodate this growth. Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue to keep you updated on our plans to better serve you. One change we made recently is an investment in a new scheduling software, which we will begin fully utilizing on April 1. (Yes, we see the irony, too, but we don’t believe that date will be a bad omen!) Please continue to let us know how we can better serve you. Your comments are helping to make Planet Beach League City a better place for everyone.

We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and hope you make it a Great Week!

Why Planet Beach?

March 14, 2012 By admin

We ask ourselves this question sometimes because we like to look at what makes us different. We know we’re not the only game in town, but our objective is to be the Best game in town.

So, what makes us different? When asked to summarize why Planet Beach to a potential new customer, we’ll say something like, “Our members enjoy a private spa experience at a fraction of the cost and in far less time than a traditional day spa.”

That sounds great. Who wouldn’t like that? But what does it mean? Why Planet Beach over other spas?

There are a lot of reasons to choose Planet Beach, but we narrowed it down to what makes us stand out the most.

  • Convenience. While sometimes we may be a bit busy, we are a one-stop shop designed to meet a lot of different needs- relaxation, facial treatments, detox, sauna, skin hydration, teeth whitening, oxygen therapy, Mystic sunless tanning and UV. Where else can you go to find so many services? Many of our members come and do multiple services on their visits. So, while they may be here for longer than if they just did one service, they don’t have to come as often, saving time, money and gas.
  • Privacy. When our members come to Planet Beach, they have their own space. We don’t have members in one large room doing spa services. A lot of spas don’t have this. Our members tell us they enjoy coming to have that alone time without interruption.
  • Affordability. Our spa memberships are all inclusive. Members don’t have to pay extra for a massage or per service price for an aesthetician. Tipping is not expected, and members can do a number of spa services multiple times per month for less than the cost of a single visit to a traditional day spa.
  • Caring and Knowledgeable Staff. All of our Spa Consultants are fully trained and knowledgeable on their subjects. Their objective is to get you the best results, and they care about health and wellness personally. Two of our consultants were Planet Beach members before joining the team. We make it a practice to hire professionals who see Planet Beach as a career opportunity rather than a part-time job. We also hire friendly faces, making it a point to bring people on board who like working with others and are passionate about Planet Beach.
  • Multiple Locations. Another unique advantage to Planet Beach is that we have locations all over the world. Our Passport Members have the ability to use spa services anywhere there is a Planet Beach. Imagine how nice it is to do a skin hydration and detox treatment after a long flight when you’re on a business trip or vacation. Our passport members can do just that.

If you’re already a Planet Beach League City member, you know all this, but sometimes it helps to hear all the good reasons you joined Planet Beach. If you’re not yet a member at Planet Beach, we encourage you to try it out. Our UV-only members each receive three complimentary spa treatments so they can personally enjoy the spa experience and evaluate adding those services to their membership package. Planet Beach Spa members also can nominate friends, family members and co-workers for a complimentary spa day as part of our Ambassador Referral Program. We’re quite confident that those who haven’t tried it will be glad they did.

We appreciate the opportunity to serve you. Thank you for being a part of Planet Beach League City and the Planet Beach family. Our continual commitment to you is to make Planet Beach the best and most relaxing spa there is.

Make it a great week!

Planet Beach Remodeling Update

March 6, 2012 By admin

For the past couple of months, I’ve written mostly about self actualization, setting goals and finding time to relax, but very little about Planet Beach League City itself. This week it seems appropriate to do just that.

As many of you know, we have been very busy lately. In the past few months, we’ve encountered a new influx of people, mostly brought on by a series of promotions our regional office has run. We’ve also had referrals from existing clients, as well as our seasonal influx of UV tanners.

All of these factors have combined to make Planet Beach League City a very busy place lately. Having been in this business for nearly four and a half years, I’m beginning to recognize this influx of new people as another one of our growth spurts. Until now, the company has experienced two in the past four years. In 2008, when we converted from being primarily a tanning salon to a combined spa and tanning salon, we saw a massive growth spurt, and our business doubled. We’ve never looked back since then. Then in the spring of 2009, we encountered another growth spurt. Largely due to the rough economy that hit the area that year, most of that didn’t stick.

Now this year, we are going through another spurt. This time, it looks like it’s Lobby 3going to stick. We’ve made a lot of changes in the past few years that have been very popular, which has brought in a lot of new people. We have especially focused on making our environment more relaxing lately. You may have noticed some little touches in the spa, like new décor and spa water. Shortly, you’ll see new paint and new flooring. We’re also committed to improving and upgrading our service mix, so you’ll see some changes there, too.

Our team has changed a lot over the years also. When I first came to Planet Beach League City in October 2007, our team consisted largely of high school students working here part-time. As we’ve grown, we’ve sought more professional employees who see Planet Beach as a career opportunity rather than a short-term job. From the feedback we’ve received, it sounds like you’re happy with this change.

Now, the time has come for us to further evolve as we continue to improve our spa as the type of place where people can come to relax on a regular basis and forget about the outside world and its worries, even if just for a while.

You’ve probably seen our short blurbs about the remodeling project which is beginning to take place. The process is underway, as we talk to painters and flooring contractors and begin improving our services mix. We’re excited about these changes. We’re also excited about the opportunity to improve what we offer you, our members.

With growth, there are challenges. Where it used to be pretty easy for a member to just walk in and use our spa services, we’ve now had to become more organized and pay careful attention to scheduling. Sometimes we’ve made scheduling mistakes, and we apologize for that and appreciate your patience. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our services, and scheduling is part of that. Our commitment to each of you is to make Planet Beach League City the most relaxing spa it can be.

We want to thank you for your business and for your friendship. There are so many members with whom I’ve been fortunate enough to become personal friends over the years, and I know our team members feel the same way.

Thank for allowing us the opportunity to serve you and continue being successful as a company. Thank you for your patience with us during this time of growth, as we commit to making Planet Beach a better place to relax and renew. But most of all, thank you for being our members and our friends. None of this would mean anything without you.

 Make it a great week!

Burnout…

February 29, 2012 By admin

Burnout…

That overused word we’ve all heard. Wikipedia defines it as “a psychological term for the experience of long-term exhaustion and diminished interest.” HelpGuide.org defines it as “a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.”

Burnout reduces your productivity and saps your energy, leaving you feeling increasingly helpless, hopeless, cynical, and resentful. Eventually, you may feel like you have nothing more to give. While all of us have days when we feel bored, under-appreciated or stressed out, there is a big difference between stress and “burnout”. With stress, most people feel circumstances will eventually get better. Burnout is a syndrome in which virtually every day seems like a struggle with no end in sight.

HelpGuide points out symptoms to look for to see if you’re getting close to burnout.

  • Every day is a bad day.
  • Caring about your work or home life seems like a total waste of energy.
  • You’re exhausted all the time.
  • The majority of your day is spent on tasks you find either mind-numbingly dull or overwhelming.
  • You feel like nothing you do makes a difference or is appreciated.

If you’re starting to feel this way, you may be on the road to “burnout.” HelpGuide recommends “the three R” for dealing with burnout.

  • Recognize- watch for the signs of burnout
  • Reverse- undo the stress by managing stress and seeking support
  • Resilience- build your resilience to stress by taking care of your physical and emotional health.

While burnout is most often associated with a person’s job, it may also be caused by lifestyle causes such as taking on too many tasks or not getting enough sleep or by personality traits. (Pessimistic, perfectionistic or Type A people are more likely to suffer).

Physical signs and symptoms of burnout include feeling tired and drained most of the time; lowered immunity, feeling sick a lot; frequent headaches, back pain, muscle aches or a change in appetite or sleep habits. Emotional signs include a sense of failure and self-doubt; feeling helpless, trapped, and defeated; detachment, feeling alone in the world; loss of motivation; an increasingly cynical and negative outlook and a decreased satisfaction and sense of accomplishment. Behavioral signs include withdrawing from responsibilities; isolating yourself; procrastinating, taking longer to get things done; using food, drugs or alcohol to cope; taking out your frustrations on others and skipping work or coming in late and leaving early.

I’ve had personal experience with this issue, beginning in the spring of 2010. I’d owned Planet Beach League City for about two-and-a-half years and in that time, we had gone through a slew of changes. We’d totally changed our concept from tanning to spa, had exerienced personnel turnover and saw our revenues skyrocket in early 2009, only to come crashing down later that year in tandem with the economy. Overcome by financial pressures, the demands of running a business and some things going on in my personal life, I began to become disinterested and lose hope. Things then went from bad to worse. In June of that year, I was confronted with a difficult family issue, and our business was forced to face the consequences of the federally mandated tan tax, part of the 2010 Healthcare and Education Reform Act. Tired, lonely, depressed and lacking personal and emotional intimacy, I fell into burnout. I didn’t care or feel like trying anymore. Most of my burnout showed up physically- I just wasn’t taking care of myself. Things continued to get worse, and I began to experience a feeling of emotional numbness. Slowly, I felt like I was fading away…

I’m not sure what pulled me out of the quicksand. Having a few good friends helped. Some people who cared also stepped in and tried to get me back on the health bandwagon, which I eventually and reluctantly got back on. I also began to have gratitude for all the good things in my life (including a home, family and friends and a successful, thriving business)  instead of always worrying about the challenges. Slowly, but surely, I began to enjoy life again, both the simple pleasures and the big victories and even the sense of satisfaction that comes from overcoming challenges that used to drive me insane. I began to realize it was OK to take time off for me and to do things on my time schedule, instead of someone else’s. I began to give myself a break, relax and let go. I started having fun again.

Now, I’m on the road to recovery from burnout and enjoying the process. While I still have big goals and dreams, both personally and professionally, I take time out for me and don’t push myself to get it done all at once. I’m learning that a contented life is a process, not a destination. I’m learning to take care of me once more.

I share this because some of you, too, may be experiencing a feeling of burnout. It will get better, I promise. Just don’t give up faith and quit.

If you feel like you’re on the road to burnout, here are some steps to put the brakes on.

  • Start the day with a relaxing ritual. (Meditation, gentle stretches, journaling, or a morning walk).
  • Adopt healthy eating, exercising and sleeping habits. This habit alone will give your body, mind and spirit the strength needed to face most challenges.
  • Set boundaries. Learn a new favorite word- “no”. This will free up time to do what you really want.
  • Take a daily break from technology. A total disconnect. I do this on walks around my neighborhood- it is so freeing!
  • Nourish your creative side. Write, sing, dance, cook! Remember what it means to be alive!
  • Learn how to manage stress. For me, this means, slowing down, taking deep breaths and taking “mini breaks” on a work day. It also sometimes means just seeing challenges as what they are- situations that will eventually be resolved. If it’s too late (you’re already there), don’t give up hope. You can emerge. Here are some tips.
    1. Slow down. Cut back and give yourself time to rest, reflect and heal.
    2. Get support. Friends and family are important during this time. Turn to them for support and share your feelings with them. This will do wonders to ease your burdens.
    3. Reevaluate your goals and priorities. Take time to think about your hopes, goals and dreams. Maybe you’re neglecting something that’s really important to you. Burnout can be a time to figure our what makes your heart sing and to then change course if needed.

I encourage everyone who reads our newsletter to look for ways to avoid burnout. A great many of you have said you come to Planet Beach to de-stress, and that means a lot to us. We are very happy to provide a place for you to come “forget about your cares.” You also most likely have other ways to manage stress and avoid burnout. However you deal with stress, don’t overlook that need. Managing emotional or spiritual health is just as important as managing physical health. If we don’t take care of our spirit, our body and mind will soon suffer, as well.

For those of you at burnout, it’s OK. It will get better. Take time for yourself. Refresh, connect and reflect. One of my favorite songs of all time is “Be Good to Yourself” by Journey, off their album Raised on Radio.

Here are the lyrics:

“Runnin’ out of self-control
Gettin’ close to an overload
Up against a no win situation
Shoulder to shoulder, push and shove
I’m hangin’ up my boxin’ gloves
I’m ready for a long vacation

Be good to yourself, when nobody else will
Oh be good to yourself

You’re walking a high wire, caught in a cross fire

Oh be good to yourself

When you can’t give no more

They want it all but you gotta say no
I’m turnin’ off the noise that makes me crazy
Lookin’ back with no regrets
To forgive is to forget
I want a little piece of mind to turn to

Be good to yourself when, nobody else will
Oh be good to yourself
You’re walkin’ a high wire, caught in a cross fire
Oh be good to yourself

Be good to yourself when, nobody else will.”

Be good to yourself this week. Remember, each day is a precious gift. Make it a great week.

-Bill
